The Grand Budapest Hotel is witty, fun and full of colorful character’s. The acting, design and music are so spot on I’m glad it didn’t go unnoticed with the nomination’s and awards received. This is one of those movies when at home watching it can make me stop what I’m doing and pay attention. I’ll set down my phone, hand held or whatever I have in hand and give it my full attention and it promptly rewards me with excellence on many levels.
The first thing that caught me when I watched this movie was the color just wow!… I love that there are so many complimentary color’s in play between the super saturated purple suits with the creamy orange backgrounds that greet us at the beginning of the movie. I wish I could have been part of the production team that went through making all these amazing design choices. The costume designers did an excellent job I adored each and every characters clothes and felt they were all so well executed.
At first the 4:3 aspect ratio threw me off but soon it hit me POW! in the face with just how brilliant of a choice it was since it made you focus on the characters and what is going on between them since the writing/performance is simply excellent. It also made me feel aesthetically in the “period” if when this takes place since the indication at least to me would have been when most of us at home would have been seeing this in that aspect ratio. Whether this was the whole point of this or not Wes Anderson I haven’t researched it yet but it is something I will certainly look up.
Let’s not forget the amount of enormous star cast! Oh, to be on the set with all these people especially during the funeral I can only imagine the amount of retakes it took to do those scene’s while trying to deliver those over the top performances.
This is one of the few movies I have watched more than once for my own leisure and to share this wonderful piece of art with my friends who promptly thank me for sharing it with them. Seriously people go out and watch this movie!
